Noriko Yamaguchi Photo Exhibition I was there.

I'm a strong believer that a photographer should always be taking pictures. So, works I showed in the past and subsequently forgot about lay buried at the bottom of my negative case in my dark room. But, I purposely dig them out and show them.

Swamped with work, I decided to take off and travel solo around Europe for one month in 2002. I wanted to go places where no one knew me. I chatted with people I met, took their photos and, when offered, accepted their invitations to dinner or to spend the night at their homes. I also wandered the streets at night taking pictures of places when there was nobody around. Now, if I think about it, it was rather foolhardy for a woman to do by herself. But, I was young and free to the point of feeling lonely.

These works are proof that “I was there.” No more, no less.
