In order to fill the world with emotion, we must protect the health of our society and planet.

Sony Electronics (North America)

Sony Electronics held it’s annual Earth Day Children’s Artwork contest. The 2022 theme focused on what actions we can take to help save the plant . Winning entries were incorporated into an electronic calendar which was shared with all North America and Canada employees. Over 100 entries received, winning entries sponsored by employees from SCA/SPE/DADC/SBT/SNA*.

Sony Electronics (North America)

In September 2022, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) honored Sony Electronics with an iCommute Diamond Award at the Platinum level for their leadership in sustainable commuting. Reduction in employee's environmental footprint, through policies, programs and facilities, participation in SANDAG activities providing alternative commuting choices in the San Diego region.

Sony Electronics (North America)

Sony Electronics partnering with Electronic Recyclers International, T&N Computer Recycling and the Kōkua Hawaii Foundation provided a free e-waste and 3R collection event at Waialae Elementary School, Oahu, in January 2023. One of the Sony Open in Hawaii sustainability initiatives; the event collected approximately 2000 kg of unwanted consumer electronics in addition to other items collected for recycling and reuse within the local community.

Sony Electronics supported I Love a Clean San Diego 27th Kids Ocean Day in May 2022. With over 150 students, mentors, volunteers and staff discovering the joy in nature while involved in a litter clean up on Mission Beach, San Diego followed by an artistic group photo. Sony Electronics partnered the event providing on ground photography and footage of the event.

Sony UK Technology Centre

In October 2022, Sony UK Technology Centre in Pencoed held their annual teambuilding event with Sustainability as this year’s theme. Through the event, the UK TEC team built 165 wooden bird boxes which will eventually be donated to local schools to promote biodiversity.

Sony Iberia/Sony UK

In October 2022, Sony Iberia conducted a Barcelona beach clean as part of Sony’s “One Blue Ocean Project” with 38 employees joining the event. Sony UK Sales & Marketing team along with the Basingstoke Canal Society, volunteered and cleared invasive weeds and litter from the canal.

Sony Europe European Professional Engineering (EPE)

In February 2022, EPE implemented a plan to reduce their carbon footprint. The use of a “Wake-on-LAN" tool, for instance, enabled users to turn on power-hungry devices from home that previously were left on overnight. Overall they anticipate a 40,000 kWh reduction in energy consumption over the year, a 40% saving in EPE.

Sony Companies in Pan-Asia Region

A regional “Food for the Future” campaign was rolled out from July to October 2022 to promote food sustainability to employees. Activities held include serving of environmentally conscious food at canteen, making of beewax wrap to reduce single-use plastic, distributing edible but blemished fruits and snacks to reduce food waste.

Sony EMCS (Malaysia) held a beach clean-up day in September 2022 at Bagan Lalang, Sepang as part of “One Blue Ocean Project” and collected approximately 138kg of waste.

Sony Electronics Asia Pacific & Sony Electronics Singapore

In March 2023, 20 Sony employees in Singapore accompanied 22 underprivileged children for an inter-tidal walk at Changi Beach to learn about wild marine animals and the importance of biodiversity conservation. They then helped to conserve the habitat with a coastal cleanup, collecting approximately 25kg of garbage.

Sony India

Sony India launched an Electronic Waste Recycling Awareness Campaign on social media in August and September 2022 and via newspaper in November 2022 to enhance consumer awareness on environmentally sound disposal of electronic waste. The Pan-India circulation of the newspaper publication in multi-languages reached more than 4.2 million readers and the awareness video posted on social media received more than 3.7 million views in total.

Sony Indonesia

To reduce shoreline erosion, 500 mangrove saplings were planted at Mangrove Ecotourism Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta by 50 employees in February 2023. In addition, all employees made a conscious effort to conserve electricity use in their offices, and a portion of the amount saved since August 2022 has been allocated to this initiative.

Sony Middle East & Africa

Sony Middle East & Africa took part in a Recycling Program which started with paper recycling in September 2022 and followed by mobile phone recycling in October and November 2022. A total of approximately 2,230 kg of waste paper and 90 pieces of unwanted mobile phones were collected from employees. Achievement of these two collection targets was awarded with the planting of two native tree saplings at Ras Al-Khaimah in December 2022.

Sony Technology (Thailand)

In March 2023, a total of 370 employees planted 2000 mangrove saplings at Khlong Tamru Environmental Education, Chonburi. Since 2013, Sony has planted 6000 mangrove saplings in this area and helped maintain the ecosystem by releasing aquatic animals such as fishes and crabs, and clearing the garbage trapped among the mangroves.

Sony Electronics Vietnam

A total of 500 trees were planted at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) in March 2023 by 21 employees from Sony Electronics Vietnam. Education talk was held before the event to create awareness on environmental sustainability among employees.

Sony China

China Region is the first region to introduce cooperative Synecoculture* farming as an environmental initiative within Sony Group and has already set up five Synecoculture farms with more than 3,500 employees participating in the activity. To further promote Sony’s environment technology, vegetables grown at Synecoculture farms are provided at canteen.

*Cooperative Synecoculture™ farming is a Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. initiative to artificially create an ecosystem in which useful plants can grow, enriching biodiversity while providing food. Synecoculture™ is a trademark or registered trademark of Sakura Shizenjuku Global Nature Network.

Sony China and Sony entities in China

As part of “Wow!Wow!Biodiversity” project,* China Region has been hosting photo contest for employees and their families for seven years since fiscal year 2016. The 2022 activity successfully received 1,925 photos across Sony in China, reaching record high submission.

The excellent works of photo have been applied to Sony China Calendar.

*A project launched by the Sony Group and the Nature Conservation Society of Japan (NACS-J), an environmental NGO, to protect biodiversity.

Sony China and Sony entities in China

2023 marks the 15th year of Sony China introducing Earth hour activity in collaboration with Sony Group Corporation and Sony sites in China. This year, Sony China posted Earth hour related content to SNS in collaboration with other Sony companies in China which received more than 435,000 views in two days, engaging more people to give an hour for Earth.

Sony Korea

In October 2022, 44 employees participated in ART (Action Really Together) Campaign. The collection of 3,065 donated goods through this campaign helps people with disabilities working at the Goodwill store learn and train on-the-job skills and gain experiences for better work opportunities. The recycling of approximately 394 kg of e-wastes collected in this campaign contributes to a reduction of approximately 1.3 ton CO2 greenhouse gas emissions.

Sony Customer Service

Sony Customer Service held "Clean Day" and "Rape Blossom Project". The "Clean Day" is a nationwide cleanup activity conducted by Sony Customer Service. In FY2022, a total of 278 employees participated in the event at 21 sites. The "Rape Blossom Project" is an initiative to gift rape blossom seeds to employees who participated in the "Clean Day". Seeds were collected from rape blossoms grown by employees at Togane Technology Site and given to all 278 employees who participated in the "Clean Day".

Sony Manufacturing & Operations Corporation, Kohda-site

An environmental event, aiming to promote awareness of the environment, was held in November 2022, at the "Sony Forest" adjacent to the Kohda site. Fifty-four employees and their families participated in various activities offered at the event. For the local community, an environmental education program for local elementary school students were conducted with the aim of having the students experience and learn the importance of nature. The students learned about the role of forests, observed microorganisms in the soil, and chopped firewood.

Sony Network Communications

Sony Network Communications has been conducting forest maintenance activities in cooperation with local residents at the “So-net Forest,” located in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. This year marks the 13th year of the project, which has been certified as having absorbed a total of 292.6 CO₂-ton/year of CO₂ in 2022*. Because time and effort are needed to cultivate forests and contribute to CO₂ absorption, we believe it is important to carry out the activity over a long period of time, and will continue do so for FY2023.

*Forest CO₂ absorption assessed by Nagano Prefecture; in FY2022, employees refrained from participating in activities due to the COVID-19, and activities were led by local residents of the Osawa Property.
