There was a time when it looked like the idea of back-illuminated CMOS image sensors would never work. But Sony led the way endowing image sensors with higher sensitivity than the human eye. A key man in this success was Teruo Hirayama, who currently serves as president of Device & Material R&D Group, at Sony. Today, a world-renowned expert in image sensors, Hirayama meets Joichi Ito, the director of the MIT Media Lab and a thought leader in the area of artificial intelligence (AI). Together, they discuss how image sensors and AI will combine to enhance human capabilities and open up new possibilities in the future.
