Since joining the R&D Institute in 1993, I have been consistently involved in the development of audio technologies while moving back and forth between the research and business divisions.
Focusing on sound signal processing algorithm, my policy is to develop from the perspective of acoustic system, combining knowledge of electrical devices and acoustic transducers (microphone and loudspeaker) through practical experience.
As concrete results, my teams have contributed to the development of Digital Noise Canceling technology for headphones and automatic sound field calibration technology for AV amplifiers, etc., as well as leading the development of a variety of differentiating technologies such as open-ear acoustic device and PSAPs (Personal Sound Amplification products).

Process technology design of semiconductor devices

Since joining the company, I have been engaged in research and development of semiconductor process technology and process integration technology. Especially, I contributed to the fundamental process design of the back-illuminated CMOS image sensors and realized the vertical start-up in the mass production of world’s first backside-illuminated CMOS image sensors, which greatly contributes to Sony's device business. I also spearheaded the world’s first mass production of the stacked CMOS image sensor with innovative Cu-Cu direct bonding technology, including its R&D. Currently, I manage the total design of semiconductor processes spanning across image sensor devices and display devices (liquid crystal, M-OLED).

Application service design development technology consisting of Growth theory, data analysis, design thinking, etc.

I joined the team to design applications at the start of the personal computer VAIO, and along with the establishment of the PC Application Center, I have contributed to each division in the development of Windows/Mac applications for VAIO. Since then, I have been engaged in the development of cloud services with a focus on technologies such as growth theory, design thinking, and data analysis. Currently, I’m promoting solution development with AI development utilizing data and contribution to all of Sony's businesses with data analysis.

I studied the evaluation method for optics systems in university days and have been working as optics designer, especially for camera objectives. The number of optics patents I applied for is the highest in the world. I made patent strategies and innovated new lens technology. As for interchangeable lens, I had been working for digital imaging products to connect planning, design and marketing team. Now I'm putting my energy to developing a new optical device and designing an architecture for it.

PhD in mathematics. After entering Sony Corporation, studied forward error correction (FEC), especially algebraic codes like Reed-Solomon and BCH codes and probabilistic codes like turbo and LDPC codes. After that, joined worldwide broadcasting standardization in order to obtain SEPs in FEC, and developed standards and their receiver HWs. As a derivation from Bayesian network used in LDPC decoder, deep neural network and its implementation is also now studied, together with sensing signal processing.

My specialty is plasma physics. Since joining Sony, I have been engaged in the research and development of semiconductor process technology. I have been involved in basic research on microfabrication technology necessary for LSI manufacturing. I have also led many joint research projects and academic conferences related to plasma process control. In particular, a number of research results published in the past on dissociation control of gas molecules in plasma, reaction models of etching surfaces, plasma damage control for various materials, etc. have been highly evaluated worldwide, and these technologies and knowledge are widely applied to semiconductor manufacturing in the world. Currently, I am also a specially appointed professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology, and I am also making efforts to train young researchers. Ph.D. (engineering) . After completing a PhD in communications and information theory, I worked for many years in the area of hierarchical modulation and broadcast transmission systems in general.

Today, I am responsible for projects and researchers in a wide area of technologies, such as speech and language processing, AI, image and video processing with RGB and multispectral sensors, optics, mm-wave radar, indoor localization, nearfield communications (NFC) as well as digital communications.

Development of catadioptric optical system

I have experiences in the lens design and product development of the entire range of projection lenses, from ultrashort throw (UST) to long throw. In particular, I have been involved in the development of UST lenses using aspherical mirrors since the early 2000s. While experiencing various difficulties, I have been involved in the lens design of 4K UST projectors and other products. Recently, I have been researching new lens system and its lens design methods on UST lens with catadioptric relay. This lens system enables significant miniaturization and low distortion onto curved screen, which could not be achieved with conventional UST lenses. In August of this year, I presented "Ultrashort Throw Lenses with Catadioptric Relay Suitable for Flat and Curved Screens" at SPIE Optics and Photonics, one of the major optics international conferences.

I specialize principle mechanism-based problem solving and new element development based on a wide range of device expertise such as sensors, magnetic recording, MEMS, semiconductors, and a wide range of business process experiences such as development, design, process, system, production start-up, and customer I/F. We have independently launched a simulation method that quantitatively models phenomena from the atomic level to the set level based on the principle mechanism, which has not been realized elsewhere, and is developing it for device and set element developments.

My original field of expertise is mathematics with the specialization in the game theory (Warsaw University 1986-1992). I joined Sony R&D in Belgium in 1996 as a software engineer. Over the past 24 years, I have been promoted to management positions and have gained knowledge in various technologies (embedded SW, cloud technologies, security, privacy, blockchain, big data analytics, ML/AI) as well as vast experience in all aspects of product development (from research and QA to productization and factory processes).
As the GM of RDC Europe Brussels Laboratory I am leading research and development of various security related technologies. Most recent examples include:

  • Multi-factor, frictionless, behavior-metric based authentication technologies (gait, heartbeat)
  • Privacy preserving secure computation technologies (differential privacy, MPC, homomorphic encryption)

I have more than 30 years of experience in system LSI development, software development, image signal processing, and algorithm development for camera products.
Sensing Platform developed in Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation is a large system that includes various technologies such as sensor devices, Machine Learning, Vision signal processing, from Edge to Cloud. My main mission is to support project owner and project manager on technology issues related to system architecture and underlying technologies.

In 2004, I joined Audio Codec Development Group, Sony Corporation. Since 2015, I have been leading teams that developed the sound design for the Play Station game title called “Gran Turismo Sport”, and spatial audio solution called “Sonic Surf VR”. Together with business units, my teams won awards such as TIGA award for best audio design for Gran Turismo Sports, and a judge selection award at Japan Media Arts Festival for their 576-channel sound field synthesis called “Acoustic Vessel Odyssey”. From 2011 to 2012, I was a visiting researcher at Analysis/Synthesis Team, Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM), Paris, France. I was involved in the 3DTV content search project sponsored by European Project FP7, in research collaboration with IRCAM. I serve as a reviewer of ICASSP, INTERSPEECH, ISMIR, etc. Recently, I became a general chair of Signal Separation Evaluation Campaign (SiSEC) where my team had scored the best results for 3 consecutive years. I have numerous granted patents for audio signal processing.

I am leading the AR HMD product and technology strategy by understanding trade-offs among image quality, form factor, and cost of various optical display systems.
