to Establish Sony ExploraScience in Beijing
- for Promoting Science and Technology Among Young People -

Beijing, China, November 30, 1999 - Sony Corporation today announced that it will collaborate with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), China International Economics and Technical Cooperation Consultants, Inc. (ECOTECH) and the San Francisco-based Exploratorium museum to establish Sony ExploraScience, an educational center for the promotion of science and technology, in Beijing in the autumn of 2000. Sony and ECOTECH will form a cooperative joint venture company in the near future to begin preparations for the center. The CCPIT will lend overall support to the project.

Sony ExploraScience will combine interactive educational exhibits from the Exploratorium, a museum of science, art and human perception, with Sony's latest digital technologies to help young people nurture their curiosity about the world around them.

Commenting on today's announcement, Sony Corporation chairman Norio Ohga said, "Sony's relationship with the Exploratorium dates back to 1987, when our two founders, the late Masaru Ibuka and the late Akio Morita, first visited this museum. Well-known for their vast curiosity and strong interest in education, Mr. Ibuka and Mr. Morita were very impressed with the museum's hands-on displays, and they were the driving forces behind the mounting of a temporary Exploratorium exhibition in Tokyo in 1989."

Sony Corporation president and CEO Nobuyuki Idei added, "Sony is proud to be collaborating with the CCPIT, ECOTECH and the Exploratorium in creating this new educational center in Beijing. Through Sony ExploraScience, we hope to provide a stimulating environment for young people to deepen their understanding of science and technology, and to help them achieve their dreams for the future."
