Sony to License "Memory StickTM"
Six Electronics Leaders join Sony in Developing
"Memory StickTM" Products and Media

Tokyo, Japan - Sony Corporation today announced plans to license the hardware and media specifications of the "Memory Stick" IC recording media to the following six companies in the consumer electronics industry. The companies will now work to finalize definitive agreements to usher the "Memory Stick" into the area of digital audio applications.

Hardware Specifications Aiwa Co., Ltd.
Kenwood Corporation
Pioneer Corporation
Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd.
Sharp Corporation
Media Specifications Fujitsu Ltd.

Licensing will enable these companies to develop and commercialize "Memory Stick" compliant hardware and media and will further promote the broad use of the "Memory Stick" IC recording media with a focus on audio products. Both the hardware and media licenses will include the specifications of copyright protected "MagicGate Memory Stick", in addition to the "Memory Stick" used for a wide range of data and image applications.

"Today's announcement further demonstrates the versatility of 'Memory Stick' to link to a host of different digital products and allow consumers more access to information, data, images, and music" said Yoshihide Nakamura, Corporate Senior Vice President of Sony Corporation.

Since the introduction of "Memory Stick" in September 1998, Sony has developed and introduced a number of compliant products including Handycam digital video cameras, Cyber-shot digital still cameras, VAIO notebook and desktop computers, digital photo frame, digital photo printer, and the "Memory Stick" Walkman portable audio player.

Cumulative shipments of the "Memory Stick" media as of August 1999 have reached 1 million units, and are expected to reach 3 million units by the end of fiscal year 1999. Sony is also developing the "Memory Stick" to attain 256MB by the year 2001. Along with the support of the six companies, Sony will continue to actively promote the broad use of "Memory Stick" to the industry as the IC recording media for the coming digital network era.
