Sony Merges B&P Company with DNS to Establish New Network Company

To Provide Communication System Solutions for Digital Networks

Tokyo, Japan - Sony Corporation today announced plans to merge its divisional Broadcast and Professional Company (B&P) with its Digital Network Solutions (DNS) division, resulting in a newly established Communication System Solutions Network Company (CSNC), effective October 1, 1999.

The introduction of digital broadcasting, the fusion of broadcasting and telecommunications infrastructure, the propagation of the Internet, and the development of various types of digital networks have proceeded more rapidly than ever imagined. Combining B&P's technical expertise, marketing power, and experience-which has been accumulated over many years of serving the broadcast and professional markets-with the network expertise, electronic distribution platform technologies, and service experience of DNS will accelerate the expansion of Sony's existing business. At the same time, Sony will begin planning the development of new business based on these various digital networks.

CSNC will undertake the production and processing of digital AV content for the Internet, broadband (terrestrial, satellite, and cable) digital broadcasting, and fixed and wireless telecommunications networks while providing comprehensive system solutions for electronic content distribution. It will also provide maintenance for the above systems, expand current professional systems markets by proactively integrating new digital network technologies, and develop and promote digital network-based on-line services business.

CSNC will take its place alongside Sony Corporation's Home Network Company (HNC), Personal IT Network Company (PNC), Core Technology and Network Company (CNC), and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) and work in close cooperation with other business units to further develop network related business.

Sony Corporation Executive Deputy President Junichi Kodera will accept additional responsibility as President and COO of the Communication System Solutions Network Company (CSNC). Corporate Executive Vice President Sunobu Horigome, who is currently president of Sony Digital Network Solutions (DNS), and Corporate Senior Vice President Mitsuru Ohki, who is currently President of B&P, will become Deputy Presidents of CSNC.
