Sony Announces "Memory StickTM WalkmanR"
Stores music contents on a copyright-protected "MagicGate Memory StickTM "

NW-MS7

Tokyo, Japan- Sony Marketing (Japan) Inc. today announced plans to launch a "Memory Stick Walkman" portable audio player, model [NW-MS7], on the Japanese market this December. The new product stores music on compact "MagicGate Memory Stick" (hereafter MG Memory Stick) IC recording media which offers robust copyright protection technology.

The "Memory Stick Walkman" is a portable audio player that has been developed to support the rapidly emerging market for Electronic Music Distribution (EMD) services over digital networks such as the Internet1. It enables electronically delivered digital music content to be downloaded and stored on "MG Memory Stick" media.

Sony will add the "Memory Stick Walkman" to the existing lines of cassette tape, CD, and MD Walkman products to offer a new way to enjoy music in the coming digital network era.

The "Memory Stick Walkman", with its compact size (37mm width, 96.3mm height, 19.2mm depth) and lightweight (approx.65g incl. battery), is small enough to be carried around easily in a chest pocket. It also features an anti-skip function that allows for uninterrupted enjoyment of music during a commute or while jogging.

The new product incorporates "MagicGate2" copyright protection technology to securely store music content on compliant "MG Memory Stick" IC recording media. Another copyright protection technology called "OpenMG3" allows for a secure exchange of music content between the "Memory Stick Walkman" and personal computers. The bundled "OpenMG" compliant application software enables a PC to securely store digital music content downloaded using EMD services on its hard disk and allows the content to be transferred to "MG Memory Stick" media. It is also possible to compress audio CD content for storage on "MG Memory Stick".

Digital music content, whether distributed electronically or copied from an audio CD is stored on a PC's hard disk using "ATRAC34" audio compression technology. The compressed music data can be transferred to a "Memory Stick Walkman" through a USB cable and adapter. The 64MB "MG Memory Stick" can store approximately 80 minutes of music in standard compression mode.

The new "Memory Stick Walkman" also features a full-dot LCD screen for up to three lines of album titles and track names to be displayed in full Japanese characters. The new product is easy to operate with its "jog lever" and simple ejection mechanism for the "MG Memory Stick" media.

  1. PC is required to download music content from EMD services on the Internet.
  2. MagicGate: Copyright protection technology for "MG Memory Stick" and compliant products. Authentication technology ensures that protected content is only transferred between compliant devices and media, and protected content is recorded and transferred in an encrypted format to prevent unauthorized copying or playback.
  3. OpenMG: Copyright protection technology that securely manages the music data from EMD/Audio CD on a PC. Application software installed in the PC encrypts the digital music content when recording on the hard disk. This allows the user to enjoy music content on the computer, but prevents the unauthorized transmission of music content across a network or elsewhere. This PC copyright protection complies with the "MagicGate", and allows digital music content to be stored from a PC's hard disk to a compliant device. Also, "OpenMG" software is capable of converting MP3 and PCM to ATRAC3 for use in the "Memory Stick Walkman".
*Both "MagicGate" and "OpenMG" will comply with the SDMI (Secure Digital Music Initiative) specifications to enable the storing and playback of music contents to protect the rights of copyright holders.
  4. ATRAC3: This sound compression technology can achieve roughly twice the data reduction rate of the ATRAC sound compression used for the Mini Disc.
