Dr. Yoshiyuki Kaneda, Executive Deputy President and
Representative Director of Sony Corporation,
To Receive Singapore National Day Award (Public Service Star)

Tokyo, Japan - Dr. Yoshiyuki Kaneda, Executive Deputy President and Representative Director of Sony Corporation, will receive the Singapore National Day Award (Public Service Star) from President Ong Teng Cheong at a banquet at 8pm in Singapore on November 12.

The award recognizes Dr. Kaneda's long-term commitment to the improvement of science technology in Singapore. In addition, Dr. Kaneda was instrumental in establishing Sony Precision Center (SPEC) in Singapore, a manufacturing facility that produces key devices and components such as optical pick-ups. This was highly appreciated by the Singapore government.

Dr. Kaneda was invited to become a member of the National Science and Technology Board International Advisory Panel in 1992, and since then he has provided advice and help for the development of science technology and an industry infrastructure in Singapore. He has also lectured at the National University of Singapore and shared with the University his academic transcript in the area of magnetics. Through such involvement, Dr. Kaneda also strengthened the relationship between Sony and Singapore.

Commenting on today's announcement, Dr. Kaneda said, 'It is a great privilege and honour to receive the Public Service Star award from the Singapore government. This recognition means a lot to me and the Sony companies here as it reaffirms our commitment and contributions to Singapore.'

Sony established its first company in Singapore in 1973 to handle local sales and marketing activities. Nine years later, Sony set up its Asian regional headquarters in Singapore, and in 1987 Sony established SPEC. Since then, Sony has expanded its presence in Singapore to include a Cathode Ray Tube manufacturing plant, a distribution center and information systems center. As a result, Singapore has become a major business hub for Sony's Asian operations.

The Singapore National Day award was founded in 1962 and has been presented to civil and non-civil servants who have made an outstanding contribution to the country in a variety of fields. This is the first time for a foreign investor based in Singapore to receive this honour.
