This was the first FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup since this FIFA tournament was renamed from what was formerly known as the U-20 Women's World Championship.
Sixteen teams who qualified from each confederation's preliminaries gathered in Chile from November 19 to December 7, 2008. The tournament format consisted of a group stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals, the match for 3rd place, and the final. A total of 32 matches were played in four venues of Santiago, Coquimbo, Chillan, and Temuco.
The final took place at the Estadio Municipal de la Florida in Santiago. Tickets were sold out and the 12,000-capacity stadium was packed with enthusiastic supporters.
The finalists, USA and DPR Korea, both played an aggressive and attacking game, but USA came ahead 2-0 at half time. DPR Korea fought back and scored a goal during additional time, but it was too late. USA prevailed 2-1 and captured the title.
