4The FIFA Futsal World Cup, held once every four years, marked its sixth tournament this year with the participation of 20 of the world's finest teams qualifying from the preliminary competitions held in the six confederations. The final competition was held from September 30 to October 19, 2008, and the first and second rounds, the semi-finals, the match for third place, and the final was held over a 20-day period.
Held in the birthplace of futsal, the host, Brazil, had claimed three of the past five titles. The final which was held on October 19 in Rio de Janeiro between Brazil and Spain was a 2-2 tie after 40 minutes and the two rivals were still in a deadlock after overtime, forcing a penalty shoot-out. Brazil prevailed at the end and captured their fourth championship title, pleasing the ecstatic crowd that packed the futsal stadium.
