The FIFA Club World Cup marked its fifth year. Seven champion clubs representing their confederation participated in the 10-day tournament held from December 11 to 21, 2008.Tickets for the final at International Stadium Yokohama was sold out and the stadium was packed with 68,682 spectators. The finalist were Manchester United (England) representing UEFA (Europe), with an impressive line-up that includes Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal national team member) and Wayne Rooney (England national team member), and Liga de Quito (Ecuador) from CONMEBOL (South America). Manchester United overcame a one-man deficit and won 1-0 with a second-half goal by Rooney, capturing the title as widely expected.

The tournament will move to UAE in 2009 and 2010 and is scheduled to return to Japan again in 2011 and 2012.

FIFA Flag Bearer

From Oct. 31 to Nov. 19, Sony invited users to apply for the role of FIFA Flag Bearer on three match days through the "Sony Style" website (http://www.jp.Sonystyle.com/Special/Cwc2008/index.html). The application period ran from October 31 to November 19. Applicants were to meet certain criteria, including having a "Sony Style Membership" and being the age of 10-16 as of December 11, 2008, when the tournament kicks off. A total of 14 pairs or 28 persons (the Flag Bearer and his/her guardian) were selected to take part in this event.

The 14 pairs selected received two tickets to the match for which they performed the role of Flag Bearer. The children also received a complete adidas uniform for theirs to keep.
