Conveying the thrill of the stadium
to the world in vivid 3D images

Amid the excitement of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, Sony supports FIFA’s production of never-seen-before 3D coverage of the thrilling action of 25 games from South Africa, by using its state-of-the-art 3D technologies. In addition to awesome goalmouth action and the colorful facial expressions of players, this coverage is delivering to people around the world a 3D experience of the dreams, thrills and joy generated by football.

Sony’s 3D technologies support the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in 3D.

Sony’s broadcasting equipment for 3D is in use at five stadiums: Soccer City and Ellis Park in Johannesburg and the venues in Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. From the group stage match between South Africa and Mexico right through to the thrilling climax of the World Cup Final, 25 matches are being shot in 3D and broadcasted around the world by ESPN (USA), Sogecable (Spain), SKY Perfext JSAT (Japan) and other broadcasters.

16 (8 pairs) Sony HDC-1500 multi-format, portable camera rigs are being used to capture the 3D images.

Multi Image Processor "MPE-200"

Thanks to Sony’s MPE-200 multi-image processor, which can quickly analyze and adjust differences easily in color and other discrepancies in 3D images taken by pairs of cameras, stunning high quality footage is being created in 3D with optimal efficiencies in production.

In addition, outside broadcast trucks equipped with MPE-200 and others were brought in South Africa by air.

3D experience pavilions offering the as-if-you-were-there excitement of 3D images are open in 7 countries including South Africa. For the duration of the World Cup, the pavilions are showing 3D entertainment contents including music, movies and games as well as highlights of the 25 matches in 3D.*

Sony’s 3D experience pavilion in South Africa
attracts 3,000 people each day!

At Johannesburg, South Africa on 8th Jun, Sony unveiled a premium 3D experience pavilion featuring a 280 inch 3D LED screen and 240 seats, at Nelson Mandela Square (Sandton City) in celebration of the first ever FIFA World Cup™ to be produced in 3D.

Companies from across the Sony Group were involved in bringing images to life at the pavilion, from music, movies to games. Entertainment attractions at the opening event included the world premiere of the 3D music video of "Waka Waka," the official 2010 FIFA World Cup™ song performed by the leading artist of Sony Music Entertainment, Shakira, in collaboration with South African group Freshlyground. Also, 3D music video of "Maware Maware" by Misia, the only Asian artist to be featured on the official World Cup album "Listen Up!" was shown on 13th Jun, together with her live performance.

The thrill of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™
in your own home

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) will produce and distribute a Blu-ray Disc in 2010 with highlights of the 25 games captured in 3D. Currently people can enjoy 3D promotional trailers for the Blu-ray Disc at about 4,000 selected locations around the world including Sony flagship stores, Sony-affiliated retail outlets, and other retailers.
