A leader in human augmentation, Jun Rekimoto of Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. has introduced epoch-making technologies in the areas of multi-touch interfaces and augmented reality. Rekimoto is working on a project he calls "JackIn", inspired by the idea of one person being transported through cyberspace into the world of another, originally described as "jack in" in the science fiction novel Neuromancer by William Gibson. Rekimoto meets Gibson, who at a time in the 1980s when the term "virtual reality" had not yet been introduced, foretold future directions in technology in poetic form. Rekimoto explores Gibson's creation of unique new science fiction worlds and the two discuss where technology may take us next.
