On October 28, 2010, Sony held an event under the banner "Ten Years of Light and Sound - Exploration of the Future" to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of Sony ExploraScience (Beijing). The only facility of its kind in China, Sony ExploraScience(Beijing) is an interactive popular science center whose theme is light and sound. The event was attended by ranking officials of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, Chaoyang District Government, Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and Beijing Association for Science and Technology, as well as executives of the China International Economic and Scientific Cooperation Consultation Corporation, experts in the field of science diffusion and education, Akira Kubota and Haruyasu Nagata (Chairman and President, respectively, of Sony (China) Ltd.), and concerned members of Sony Corporation. The event included a ceremony featuring the lighting of a "Circle of Time" symbolizing the ten years of social contribution activities at the museum and children's scientific exploration.
Sony ExploraScience (Beijing) is a facility for the discharge of corporate social responsibility in a distinctively Sony fashion, in keeping with the CSR message of the Sony Group: "For the Next Generation". Thus far, it has attracted a cumulative total of more than 1.10 million visitors. It began accepting groups without charging an admission fee in 2008, and applies the revenue from fees from individual visitors to the cost of Education Support Project in impoverished rural areas. Through this project, it has conducted demonstrations of scientific experiments at elementary schools in more than 80 rural communities, and thereby awakened many children to the interest of science.
In China as well, society has given high ratings to Sony ExploraScience (Beijing). So far, it has been designated as a center of education for the promotion of science by the district, municipal, and national authorities as well as an advanced organization for related work by the municipal and national authorities. It has consequently received visits by many elementary and junior high school students.
At the anniversary event, Mr. Nagata, who serves as Chairman of the Beijing Suoming Science Park Co. Ltd.as well as President of Sony (China) Ltd., outlined plans to carry the Education Support Project a step further and commence a program titled "Thousand Miles Journey of Science" under it in November 2010. This program will take an event for the diffusion of science held at the ExploraScience (Beijing) to halls of science and youth centers throughout China. As a vehicle for scientific education of an interactive and highly entertaining character, it will be able to convey the interest of science to a wider circle of youth while being a lot of fun at the same time. It is scheduled to be held once a month in a different place in various parts of China.
