Sony Initiatives for a Greener Future: in Hollywood
Openly lending out used television and feature film sets and promoting reuse. Sony’s environmental efforts are spreading in Hollywood.
As many as 14,000 television and movie set pieces made available for reuse

This is a warehouse in the suburb of Hollywood, in Los Angeles. Inside, used television and feature film sets are held in stock. While massive scale sets are created for shooting films, most of them will be demolished and then disposed of after filming. This is why Sony Pictures Entertainment initiated the reuse of television sets in 1990, and film sets in 2001. At first, sets were reused within the company; then in 2002, the company became the first in the motion pictures industry to operate an online leasing system of used sets through its website. Currently, feature film sets are leased to other motion picture studios and TV production companies. Approximately 14,000 set pieces were reused in 2007, conserving 413 tons of natural resources – when compared to building them from scratch. Furthermore, Sony Pictures seeks to avoid waste generated from the disposal of sets by donating set pieces to charity organizations and schools. Some charity organizations sell the items and use the proceeds to support their organizations. In case of disposal, materials are carefully separated by resource in the attempt to recycle to a maximum extent. It is not only metal and glass that are recycled – for example, wooden material not applied with chemicals are made into biochips and into fertilizers, and painted wood is ground and utilized as cushioning. Through meticulous efforts going into material separation, over 70% of materials that cannot be reused or donated to charity organizations are being recycled. Environmentally friendly activities do not simply stay within the company, Sony Pictures Entertainment believes, that way, a greater impact can be generated.

Actively promoting solar power generation and LED lighting

Sony Pictures is also committed to saving energy during television and motion-picture filming. Energy efficient LED lighting was used in film production on the latest “007”(*1), Motion Picture, “QUANTUM OF SOLACE”. Since LED lights consume 50% less electricity and generate 70% less heat, there was significant contribution to reducing power for air conditioning. New efforts, including the trial use of portable solar panels to power cast member trailers, were also made for the upcoming feature “ANGELS & DEMONS,” from the team behind "THE DA VINCI CODE,” to be released in 2009. While these are still experimental efforts, they are expected to expand in the future upon examining the effectiveness.
In addition, as the only ISO14001(*2) certified studio in the industry, Sony Pictures is engaged in environmentally friendly activities for its offices buildings and studios spaces as well. It reviewed the power supply system of the studio in 2000, shifting from bringing in diesel generators to augment power supply, to installing additional electrical cables. This enabled the creation of an environment where clean energy can be utilized. Furthermore, in March 2008, a 196kw solar photovoltaic power generating installment was set up on the rooftop of an office building. The solar power generated from this system is expected to cut CO2 emissions by approximately 100 tons per year. Sony Pictures is also implementing thorough control of chemical substances, avoiding use of toxic material or paint when constructing sets and creating manuals for using environmentally friendly resources.
Because the entertainment created by the studio delivers inspiration to the world, it should be created with consideration to the environment. The Sony vision of a greener future is well underway.
