Sony Initiatives for a Greener Future: Water Power from the Alps
Striving to conserve energy: Water from the Alps powers Blu-ray Disc Factory with 100% Green Energy

In the town of Anif, not far from Salzberg Austria where Mozart was born, is a Sony Blu-ray Disc Factory. Situated in a picturesque valley surrounded by the Alps, a river carrying snowmelt from the mountains above flows into the town. It is here that the Sony DADC Austria Anif Factory, through a variety of energy conservation measures, became 100% powered by Green Energy in Nov 2007.

A region that has historically tapped water power thanks to the mountainous terrain and abundant rainfall, Sony made an additional investment in the existing hydro infrastructure to make the Anif Factory a Green Energy facility. This investment specifically went to ensuring the protection of the surrounding environment, which is important to Sony. Part of this investment went into the building of a fish path beside the dam to allow the fish to spawn. Utilizing nature to realize environmentally friendly energy is one of our major goals. As a member of the local community, Sony is striving to protect the environment and make Green Energy a reality at the same time.

* Green energy is defined as energy that does not emit CO2, such as from water, wind, solar and biomass sources.

Utilizing Nature to Conserve Energy

Working towards achieving a zero carbon footprint goes beyond simply purchasing green energy. There are a number of additional energy conservation measures that were implemented at the Anif Factory. A control system to manage stand-by power of manufacturing equipment and the reworking of compressors to minimize air leakage are a few examples of the ongoing energy conservation efforts that have led to an 18% improvement in energy conservation over that past four years. The location of the factory takes advantage of the natural surroundings, utilizing abundant ground water for temperature management facilities and to cool equipment. The water used in these processes is not polluted in any way and ultimately returned to the river without causing harm to the environment. Moreover, efforts are being made to conserve resources at the Anif Factory. The polycarbonate material generated during the disc manufacturing process is recycled and re-used in house. The wasted plastic is recycled into parts for use in other Sony products, a process that helps reduce production CO2 emissions little by little with each disc made. Attention has been brought to disc packaging itself, with Sony developing its own "Eco-packaging" by shifting from plastic to recyclable materials. Packaging called "Bend-it" incorporates environmentally friendly materials to even include the ink and adhesives, realizing next generation packaging. Co-existing with the surrounding environment, Sony is striving to conserve energy and resources at locations all over the world. The Sony vision of a greener future is well underway.
