For longer battery life, Sony engineers focused on making the system-on-chip in the recorder more energy-efficient. Each device on the chip was updated with a more efficient version, and new embedded software was developed for greater energy efficiency overall. The cumulative result of each subtle improvement is an impressive 30% gain in battery life over the previous model (ICD-AX80, about 65 hours), up to about 84 hours.
Most voice recorders lack rechargeable batteries, so the batteries must be replaced occasionally. This model was designed to support charging of rechargeable batteries (sold separately) over a USB connection to a computer. For charging or operation without a computer, a USB charging adapter is also available. Eliminating battery replacement helps conserve resources.
This stereo voice recorder can record continuously for about 84 hours. Besides impressive battery life, the recorder offers excellent recording range and sensitivity, thanks to an S-mic system, and a large, clear LCD screen simplifies operation.
