Developed by Sony, SoRPlas might be called the ultimate in recycled plastic. Not only does it boast 99% pre-consumer recycled content, it's also very durable. CO₂ emissions in production are also estimated to be 80% lower than for virgin plastic. SoRPlas was originally introduced in Sony products in some 2011 BRAVIA^* LCD TVs.

Regular flame-resistant recycled polycarbonate plastic has a 30% recycled content and is composed of 15% flame retardant. SoRPlas exceeds 99% recycled content.

Using SoRPlas in mobile devices such as video cameras presents special challenges. Unlike televisions or other installed equipment that remain in a fixed position, mobile devices must withstand rougher conditions. They must offer a certain amount of impact resistance, in case they are dropped, and some resistance to different elements, such as exposure to hand lotions. Sony improved this resistance in SoRPlas significantly by formulating it with larger molecules, among other refinements. The advances enabled the first mobile device constructed of parts made with SoRPlas—the HDR-TD20V.

Besides incorporating SoRPlas, this camcorder is also more compact. Although it features dual high-performance G lenses, two Exmor R CMOS sensors for exceptional sensitivity, and two BIONZ high-speed image processors, it is still 34% more compact than previous models.^* This impressive streamlining translates into a significant savings of resources and a much lighter camcorder that's easy to carry around.
