Superior video, audio, and environmental performance were key concepts in BDP-S185 development.
Reviewing player design inside and out made it smaller and more energy efficient than ever.

The space-saving BDP-S185 is down from 43 cm to 29 cm wide. Nearly 30% more compact, it saves considerable resources in production. What helped streamline the player was the development of custom integrated circuits. Energy-efficient circuits keep the unit cooler inside, which eliminates the need for a fan, and in turn, saves space. Engineers reviewed each internal component, seeking both better performance and a much smaller footprint.

The sleek player is also sold in a new, upright box that enhances shipping efficiency. Each pallet now holds 405 units (arranged in nine layers of 45 units), up from 232 (8x29) for the previous model.* Shipping 74% more units per pallet cuts CO2 emissions in transit by 42%.

Although smaller, the sturdy upright boxes easily withstand the rigors of shipping

The BDP-S185 comes packed with features including internet streaming, front USB slot, Full HD 1080p, high definition audio support, and IP Noise Reduction for improved internet video playback. All these features, with less energy.
The new integrated circuitry trims energy consumption impressively. Other improvements that slash overall consumption include consolidating separate microcontrollers, integrating components onto a single board, and moving from four memory modules to two. The memory reduction is offset by using the memory area dynamically, among other refinements, which enables operation at full capacity with fewer resources. All of this energy-saving innovation contributes to a player that consumes about 55% less energy in use than before,* at only 10 W.

Environmental performance should be a priority in products positioned to become popular favorites. With this in mind, the developers ensured high performance while radically shrinking the unit (by home audio standards) to 29 cm. Though smaller, the player is no less stylish. A good example of an environmentally conscious product that saves significant resources and energy.
