Managing chemical substances at Sony includes taking the initiative about chemical substances that are not currently regulated but found to pose high environmental and health risks. These chemicals are phased out or replaced, as illustrated below.
Cases and circuit boards of Walkman® NWZ-S760 personal audio players are PVC-free
Although use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in electronic products is not regulated, improper incineration after disposal may release harmful substances. PVC is no longer used in the casing and internal wiring of new mobile phones and products in VAIO®, Walkman®, Handycam®, and other lines as of March 2012 where substitution poses no quality, supply or technical issues. For Xperia™ series mobile phones and accessories, PVC has been eliminated for plastic components(as of December 2011).
VAIO® S notebook casings and motherboards are BFR-free
As with PVC, brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in plastic casings and electronic products circuit boards may release harmful chemicals under some conditions. Accordingly, BFR-free materials have been used in the casing and main circuit boards of new VAIO®, Walkman®, Handycam® and other products since March 2012 where substitution poses no quality, supply or technical issues. For Xperia™ series mobile phones, BFR has been eliminated for PWBs, casings and cables.
mercury-free alkaline button battery
Normally, a small amount of mercury must be added to button batteries to prevent hydrogen buildup inside. Eliminating mercury was viewed as very technically challenging, but Sony pushed ahead in battery R&D to reduce the risks associated with this substance. Research finally led to mercury-free alkaline button batteries in 2009, and several types of Sony zero-mercury batteries are now available worldwide.
