Green Star Program

Sony sites worldwide are taking steps towards a zero environmental footprint from the four perspectives in our Road to Zero environmental plan. Environmental performance of business operations is also carefully evaluated in the Sony Green Star Program.

Internal Environmental Assessment Green Star Program

Sony introduced the Green Star Program this year to evaluate site environmental performance, which will help reduce environmental impact as called for in our Road to Zero environmental plan. Comprehensive quantitative and qualitative evaluation of site operations from the four perspectives of curbing climate change, conserving resources, managing chemical substances, and promoting biodiversity supports our goal of a zero environmental footprint.

All sites seek a four-star rating by 2015. (Stars indicate the level of attainment.)

Four-star ratings at all sites by 2015,
meeting mid-term targets

Green Management 2015 establishes mid-term targets on the way to achieving a zero environmental footprint in our Road to Zero plan. All Sony sites are now working toward a four-star rating, signifying that they have met mid-term targets. Progress is evaluated according to some 230 qualitative assessment criteria, which helps us keep a brisk pace in environmental activities as we express each site's issues and success stories visually, move ahead in improvements, and expand measures to other group companies.

Example of evaluation criteria

Climate Change Hardware Monitor energy use with monitoring system, introduce highly efficient systems and equipment
Software Monitor energy use, raise employee awareness
Resources Waste Reduce waste, promote resource recovery and recycling, ensure correct processing by waste companies
Water Monitor water use, raise conservation awareness, take steps to conserve water
Chemical Substances Monitor handling amount, amount released and transferred, replace with alternative substances
Biodiversity Promote sustainable use of ecosystem services, conduct land use management and greening activities
