Road to ZERO

Road to Zero Sony's Global Environmental Plan

Road to Zero is Sony's global environmental plan, striving to achieve a zero environmental footprint throughout the life cycle of our products and business activities by 2050.

Road to Zero Timeline
2015 Targets

In order to reach our goal of a zero environmental footprint by 2050, our next major step consists of setting a number of targets towards 2015.

Actions from four environmental perspectives

Curbing Climate Change

Sony seeks zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, not only at plants and offices but also throughout product life cycles. Carefully reducing energy consumption at all stages—parts and materials procurement, manufacturing, distribution, product use, and take back and recycling—helps us minimize greenhouse gas emissions. Energy that we require is used from renewable sources whenever possible.

Conserving Resources

Managing limited resources wisely means reducing the amount used and recycling what is used. Maximizing use of recycled plastic and other cyclical materials* helps us avoid using virgin materials, especially valuable resources such as oil and copper which we seek to phase out entirely by 2050. Sony is also constantly intensifying efforts to promote water conservation and recycling.

Controlling Chemical Substances

To prevent environmental pollution, regulatory compliance is just the start. We have established our own standards for chemical substance management, which help maintain strict control over chemicals in parts and raw materials worldwide.

As a preventative measure, substances that may potentially pose environmental risks are phased out, and substitutes are sought.

Promoting Biodiversity

Natural resources are essential to Sony business activities, but our operations may affect the natural environment in various ways. We strive to continue protecting biodiversity (maintaining balanced ecosystems) both through Sony business activities and through conservation.
