EYE SEE III Digital Photo Project for Children
Through Our Eyes: Our Stories
Photo-reportage by the children of Rwanda and Liberia
on the issues affecting them.
Malaria is the Number One cause of death for children under five in Liveria and Rwanda - indeed, in all of sub-Saharan Africa.
Preventing and treating malaria is an integral part of efforts by UNICEF and its partners to promote child survival in all communities.
So much could be done.If only we could sfford nets then the mosquitoes wouldn't bite us at night. But I also think we need to clean our communities. All this garbage and sewage water is calling for mosquites to breed.
Linada Yaneken, Liberia
The Libera amd Rwanda Eye See III Photo Workshops, channeling the participants ti think and learn about malaria and how it can be prevented, deepened their understanding of the deathly threat the disease represents to them and their families.
In a country like Liberia half a million children under five and 100,000 pregnant women are infected every year with malaria.
In the world one million people die every year from the disease and 80 percent of those deaths are in Africa. In Africa, that’s one child dying every 30 seconds.
The photographers agree on the importance of documenting how malaria is the number one cause of death in their countries - and how it can be prevented for little cost.
The numbers are astoumding and unacceptable. We can help to change these numbers and the lives behind them. Action by goverments and partners over the last few years means the world can now make major strides against malaria.
