EYE SEE III Digital Photo Project for Children
Through Our Eyes: Our Stories
Photo-reportage by the children of Rwanda and Liberia
on the issues affecting them.
Participants learn to compose a shot - the position of the subject, the background, direction and quantity of light.
They make a reflector from card and aluminium foil so they can “bounce” bright light where it’s too dark.
They look through the camera to experience the different views from a telephoto, wide angle and standard lens.
They discuss the uses of photography. Then they form into groups and choose a theme - something of relevance to their reality,
their society - toillustrate with their reportage.
Before they handle the cameras they hear how, each time they take a photo, they must note the information needed to write the descriptive caption. This is so that the image is recorded in place and time - for possible future use in many different situations.
The participants fan out to try out their new skills.
With cameras, pen and paper in hand, they take their first shots and notedown the details of their subject and location.
Everyone reviews the hundreds of shots Giacomo's selected - there are many top quality ones. Working together,
the groups caption every image, recording the subject and why they chose it. Then there's voting to choose the Best Photo,
the Best Photographer etc. As a finale: one more showing of the photos and a certificate of participation awarded to every photographer.
I see things now that I never saw before,
