Human Rights refer to the basic inalienable rights a person holds from birth. Human rights range from the basic human rights guaranteed by a nation's constitution to the more recently recognized right of sunlight. In terms of CSR, consideration of human rights issues related to company operations extends beyond the company's own employees to the employees of the company's overseas supplier, consumers and people residing near company facilities.
The United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
*1 in 1948 to recognize that the inherent and inalienable rights held by all members of the human family are the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. The declaration's contents include the following.
"all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights","everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind","everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person","no one shall be held in slavery or servitude",
"no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment","no one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile","everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state","everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country", "everyone has the right to a nationality", "men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry","everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion","everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression","everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association","everyone has the right to education"
A company is considered to be violating human rights if its workplaces including overseas factories or suppliers engage in sexual harassment, power harassment or forced labor.
