CA AND SONY ANNOUNCE GLOBAL ALLIANCE
TO CREATE AND MARKET INNOVATIVE STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Industry Leaders To
Deliver Data Storage Management Offerings And Establish
Worldwide Joint Sales and Technical Collaboration
CA WORLD, LAS VEGAS, July 15, 2003
- Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) and Sony
Corporation today announced a global alliance for the mid-range
and enterprise storage markets involving the integration
of CA's BrightStor® storage management technology with
Sony's PetaSite® and StorStationTM
storage systems for the North American, European, Japanese
and Asian markets.
By combining their respective hardware and software expertise,
Sony and CA will deliver secure storage solutions that will
provide customers with storage environments to more effectively
and efficiently protect critical business data.
This alliance between CA and Sony is expected to result
in value-added solutions including:
- " Integration of Sony's core competency in magnetic
recording - specifically its PetaSite storage systems
- with CA's BrightStor Enterprise Backup to provide
backup consolidation solutions for data centers and
enterprise storage environments.
- " The shipping of CA's BrightStor ARCserve Backup
technology with Sony's innovative and unique StorStationTM
Advanced Intelligent TapeTM (AIT) WORM technology to
provide customers in targeted vertical markets, such
as healthcare, surveillance and financial industries,
with secure data management solutions (see related announcement).
- " The combination of Sony's file servers and tape
libraries with CA's BrightStor Mobile Backup storage
management software to provide fast, automatic and complete
backup and archival appliances for the critical data
residing on laptops and desktops within the enterprise.
These backup appliances will offer powerful, cost-effective
plug-and-play data protection for mobile users.
- " A plan to develop enterprise solutions, based on
Sony data systems products and CA's BrightStor technologies,
which address the new storage requirements of customers
in vertical markets affected by legislation regarding
data retention. In addition to their respective technical
strengths, both companies have a strong presence in
many of these vertical markets.
"Customers continue to seek storage solutions to safeguard
their valuable data without excessive cost or excessive
administration," said Frank Yang, CA senior vice president
of BrightStor Solutions. "Together, CA and Sony will provide
products that fulfill these ongoing market requirements."
According to Masashi Takao, senior general manager, Storage
Solutions Division of Sony Corporation's Broadband Communication
Company, "CA and Sony will work together toward the
goal of providing customers with complete and optimized
solutions for an open, mission critical storage environment,
by leveraging their respective core competencies: CA's in
storage management technology and Sony's in cutting-edge
magnetic recording and tape library technologies."
CA and Sony will establish technology validation centers
in North America, Europe, and Japan. The two companies are
also forming a promotion team to roll out joint marketing
and sales tools and programs to their combined distribution
channels. Joint marketing activities will include specialized
seminars and promotions at trade events such as last week's
Data Storage Expo in Japan and Storage Networking World
in the U.S. in October.
