4K images will open your eyes to a new era of excitement

Other camcorders typically support formats from SD (720 x 480) to Full HD (1920 x 1080). But the FDR-AX1 supports 4K (3840 x 2160), the extraordinary superior-definition format that delivers about four times the resolution of the Full HD (1920 x 1080) format to capture incredible details that bring images to real, vibrant life.

High-performance “G Lens” now upholds 4K quality in handier form

The “G Lens” advances the Sony heritage of image processing innovation by redefining what an aspheric lens and special low-dispersion glass together can faithfully reproduce. Accordingly, the “G Lens” is specially tuned to capture qualities of definition and colour that put this ground-breaking Handycam in a class of its own.

“Exmor R CMOS sensor” delivers multifaceted 4K support

Sony’s unique “Exmor R CMOS sensor” is essential to the stunning image quality that the FDR-AX1 achieves. Its back-illuminated structure featuring wiring layers on the back of a photodiode (light-receiving element) dramatically boosts low-light sensitivity for shooting better, more lifelike images even in dim lighting. Sony’s cutting-edge technology also makes the camera nimble at reading massive 4K data at 60 fps.

No.1 image sensor manufacturer for digital cameras and video recorders.*Based on Sony research – April 2012 to March 2013 (50% market share)

An image processor identical to a professional camcorder’s

An extraordinary image processor, identical to those in 4K camcorders used by professionals, rapidly processes signals transmitted from the CMOS sensor and finalises images. In fact, in processing the vast 4K data in real time at 60 fps, it achieves four times the resolution of the HD format. Moreover, this processor not only features high-performance noise reduction for truer images and image quality adjustment functions for greater freedom of expression; it is also specially tuned for the FDR-AX1 to deliver image processing performance that accelerates the evolution of handy-type camera recorders.

4K*1/60p*2 recording far surpasses Full HD*3

The FDR-AX1, the first 4K*1resolution Handycam, features a blazingly fast image processor identical to those included in Sony models for professional use. Because the camera can record 4K*1/60*2 fps movies at its full resolution, even images shot while panning or when subjects were moving look extraordinarily smooth, sharp and true to life in playback.

*2 59.94 Hz
*3 1920 x 1080 pixels

XAVC S consumer-use 4K/HD recording format

The FDR-AX1 records 4K/HD movies in the XAVC S format, which was developed for consumer use based on the XAVC 4K/HD format suited for professional use. To extend the hours of 4K video capture capacity, XAVC S employs the Long GOP codec of H.264/AVC for video file compression. Moreover, the MP4 container format simplifies the handling of 4K videos.*

* Playback of data is not guaranteed in all modes when using MP4 playback devices and software.

Professional-class audio XLR terminal

In addition to a high-performance internal microphone, the FDR-AX1 features two external XLR mic terminals for connecting other microphones that can also be used to record superior quality audio together with the movies. You can also mix audio from recordings made using the internal microphone and externally connected microphones, respectively.

Adopting the more capable XQD media card

The FDR-AX1 adopts the next-generation XQD memory card that supports fast 4K/HD writing/reading and makes high bit-rate* recording possible. Data can be transferred to a PC rapidly using a XQD reader/writer via USB3.0 connection.

* XQD media card N-series, S-series and later types recommended.

Viewing on 4K*1 TVs via single HDMI cable

4K*1 videos recorded on the FDR-AX1 can be played on a 4K*1 monitor using the bundled HDMI cable to connect the camera to the monitor. A 4K*1 monitor supports up to 4K*1/30p. Users who don’t have a 4K*1 television can play their 4K*1 movies on a Full HD*2 monitor by changing the menu HDMI output settings to 1920 x 1080.

Independent zoom, focus and iris rings

Independent zoom, focus and iris rings enable fast zooming, swift focusing and easy focus adjustment.

ND filter terminal

Three ND filters let you adjust the amount of light entering the image sensor from the lens. Also, the clear 1/4 filter, 1/16 filter and 1/64 filter settings give you the capability to match shooting conditions, as well as adjust the shutter speed and aperture even on bright, sunny days.

Saving spectacular 4K video content to a PC

In order to save 4K video data to a PC, there are two ways to connect a PC to FDR-AX1: either by using a USB cable, or by inserting a XQD memory card in a XQD reader/writer. Data can be downloaded to the PC, then managed and played*1 with PlayMemories Home. You can also save the data to other media such as an external HDD from a PC.*2 The video can be edited with XAVC S-compatible non-linear editing software.*3 4K video content can be shared by uploading it to YouTube.*4

*1 4K video playback depends on PC performance.
*2 Please use NTFS, exFAT or HFS+.
*3 Please refer to non-linear editing software specifications regarding XAVC S compatibility.
*4 Please refer to YouTube specifications regarding 4K video compatibility.

Connecting for 4K*1/60p*2 playback on BRAVIA 4K LED TVs

To extend BRAVIA 4K LED TV compatibility, the FDR-AX1 has an original function to transmit 4K*1/60P*2 4:2:0 8-bit signals using a single HDMI cable. In this way, you can view clear, smooth video of fast-moving sports and other subjects at 60p on BRAVIA 4K LED TVs.

Paint functions

The camera lets you combine and adjust any of five paint functions (white balance, gamma, detail, skin detail, matrix) in the paint menu, so you have the freedom to express a look or style as you like in your movie.

TRILUMINOS™ Color. A breathtaking way to relive your fondest memories.

The FDR-AX1 supports Sony’s “TRILUMINOS colour”, allowing you to view photos and movies in rich, natural colours on any TV equipped with a “TRILUMINOS Display”. The expanded colour gamut lets you immerse yourself once again in those unforgettably colourful moments, from the complex shades in a shimmering blue sky to the natural tones of a rosy complexion.
