Two keys to outstanding photos and movies

You won’t see them but they are there: Sony’s 20.1 megapixel* Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor and blazing-fast BIONZ™ image processing engine. Every scene is captured beautifully, from corner to corner, with fine details and rich tonal gradations. The sensor’s large size delivers high sensitivity, attractive defocusing effects, and low noise in wide-ranging shooting situations, including dimly lit environments. Impressive 20.1-effective-megapixel resolution and advanced BIONZ image processing also bring every detail to life.

* Effective pixels (approx.)

  • Sony is the world’s No. 1 manufacturer of image sensors for digital cameras and video recorders (based on Sony research from April 2012 to March 2013 showing Sony with 50% market share)

Soft defocusing via large image sensor

Large image sensor dimensions offer more than just higher image quality. They make it easier to achieve beautifully defocused backgrounds, which are especially attractive when shooting portraits.

Clear images with low noise even in dim lighting

The advanced BIONZ image processing engine combines with the large image sensor — which collects more light — to produce clear images with less noise even in dark settings.

High-fidelity BIONZ™ image processing engine

From vivid colours to smooth skin textures and faint rays of light, every nuance of your scene is faithfully reproduced throughout an extremely wide dynamic range. This accurate depiction is made possible by Sony’s sophisticated BIONZ image processing engine, which expertly processes every detail captured by the high-resolution Exmor™ APS HD CMOS image sensor. Even the most processor-intensive tasks are handled with amazing speed and precision, including 3.5 fps continuous shooting* at full 20.1 effective megapixel resolution and high-sensitivity shooting up to ISO 16000.

* Focus is fixed at the distance determined by the first frame. Actual shooting speed may vary depending on shooting environment and memory card.

Fabulous Full HD movies at the press of a button

Experience the magnificence of Full HD movies in AVCHD. Just press the MOVIE button and start shooting. Support for 60i/50i* gives your movies a lifelike feel with more natural movement while aspiring moviemakers can select 24p/25p* to re-create the look of traditional cinema. α3000’s responsive autofocus keeps subjects in sharp focus, allowing you to record even moving subjects and still be assured of excellent results. The built-in microphone delivers superior audio quality, and Digital Zoom can be used to extend the lens’ maximum magnification while recording.

* 1080 60i/1080 50i devices

Picture Effect — Your key to an exciting photographic adventure

Every image is a potential work of art with Picture Effect — in-camera control for turning mundane shots into little gems. α3000 includes 15 effects that can be applied to photos or movies, giving you the means to vastly expand your artistic repertoire. The ability to view effects in real-time on the LCD screen or viewfinder* before taking the shot lets you experiment with different looks until you are satisfied with the result.

* The following modes are not displayed in real-time and cannot be applied to movies: HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, Soft Focus and Miniature.

Photo Creativity — Fine tuning the look of photos and movies

α3000 provides easy access to most Picture Effect settings as well as controls for Background Defocus, Brightness, Color and Vividness. Just activate Photo Creativity, choose the appropriate item, and then adjust while viewing in real-time on the LCD screen or viewfinder. The ability to combine settings offers nearly unlimited creative control, and lets you compensate for tricky lighting.

Clear Image Zoom

If you can’t seem to get close enough to the subject, activate Clear Image Zoom. This extends the reach of your lens up to 2x without markedly degrading image quality. Clear Image Zoom employs Sony’s By Pixel Super Resolution Technology to achieve amazingly sharp zoom shots without a telephoto lens. And by combining it with α3000’s Digital Zoom and Smart Zoom*, you can increase magnification up to 8x over the lens’ maximum focal length. What’s more, Clear Image Zoom supports both photos and movies so you’ll always have plenty of reach for distant subjects.

* Smart Zoom does not support movies.

Wide-ranging sensitivity from ISO 100 to 16000

Even in dim lighting, you can shoot beautiful photos with natural tonal gradations and low noise — without using a flash. Auto ISO provides outstanding results in most lighting situations and you can select settings manually to suit particular occasions. Excellent low-light performance is made possible by cutting-edge features like the same area-specific noise reduction as found on the α99.

Anti Motion Blur / Hand-held Twilight modes (Scene Selection)

Employing Sony image compositing technology, these two modes deliver superb photos with reduced noise and blur when shooting handheld in low-light environments. Anti Motion Blur mode is especially useful for decreasing blur caused by camera shake and subject movement, while Hand-held Twilight mode balances exposure between the main subject and background for pleasing nighttime photos.

Superior Auto mode — Serious point-and-shoot simplicity

Use Superior Auto mode to shoot photos and movies with the ease of a compact digital camera. In this mode, the camera recognizes the current shooting environment and then adjusts settings for optimal results. Superior Auto also includes Auto HDR and Hand-held Twilight modes, both of which employ image compositing technology to handle difficult lighting by recording multiple images at high speed, and then compositing them to produce the final photo.

Auto HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode / D-range Optimizer (DRO)

Decrease contrast in scenes with extremely dark and light areas. Well suited for stationary subjects, Auto HDR mode combines three images — one each for highlights, mid-tones and shadows — to produce one photo that closely resembles the scene as you saw it. DRO takes only one shot, but can be used for lowering contrast in photos with moving subjects and when using continuous shooting.

Creative Style

Tailor the look of photos and movies before shooting. Choose from one of six settings — Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset or Black & White — depending on the scene or your creative intent.

Speed Priority Continuous mode

Freeze fast-moving subjects by shooting at up to 3.5 fps*. This is the ideal solution for photographing sports, children at play or other action.

* In Speed Priority Continuous mode. Continuous speed varies depending on shooting conditions and memory cards. Focus and exposure are locked at the first shot.

Soft Skin Effect

Soften skin and tame unsightly wrinkles and Soften skin and tame unsightly wrinkles and blemishes. The pros’ choice when shooting portraits to make people look their best. Adjustable in three levels.

Peaking function

Quickly confirm focus in the composition. A highlight — adjustable over three settings each for sensitivity level and color — appears over areas that are focused.

Face Detection / Smile Shutter

Set α3000 to recognize faces and smiles. Face Detection locates up to eight faces in a composition then adjusts exposure, white balance and other settings based on these faces. Smile Shutter — adjustable in three levels — automatically takes a shot when smiles in the scene are at their brightest.

Sweep Panorama

Capture a dramatic landscape or cityscape. Just swing the camera when shooting then play back on the LCD screen.

USB charging

Connect α3000 to a PC or AC outlet via the bundled micro USB cable to charge the battery without removing it from the camera.

TRILUMINOS™ Color. A breathtaking way to relive your fondest memories.

α3000 supports Sony’s “TRILUMINOS Color,” allowing you to view photos and movies in rich, natural colors on any TV equipped with a “TRILUMINOS Display.” The expanded color gamut lets you immerse yourself once again in those unforgettably colorful moments, from the complex shades in a shimmering blue sky to the natural tones of a rosy complexion.
