System Software Update Ver.1.01 for HDR-AZ1 (Windows)

What Does This Do?

This utility updates the system software and provides the following benefits:

  • Depending on the region where the camera is used, GPS logs (in movie recording) and/or location information (in still image recording) may not have been recorded. Now, this symptom is corrected.
  • When using the Live-streaming function, images were distributed in an incorrect size with the video size set at 1280x720. Now, this symptom is corrected.

IMPORTANT: This file is only for use with the models identified. Not all models are sold in all countries.

Important Notes

  • This utility is only for use with the Sony® HDR-AZ1 camcorders. Do not install this utility with any other model.
  • WARNING!!: This system software update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous system software version after updating this system software. By continuing this update process and downloading and updating this system software, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:

    A computer with:

    • One of the following Microsoft® Windows® operating systems installed:
      • Windows® 8.1
      • Windows® 8
      • Windows® 7 Service Pack 1
      • Windows Vista® Service Pack 2 (SP2) *
        * Starter Edition is not supported.
    • Available Hard Disk Space: 200 MB or more
    • Installed Memory (RAM): 512 MB or more
    • A USB port

    Camcorder power supply:

    • Fully-charged dedicated rechargeable battery pack NP-BY1 is required.
    • This update can only be performed when the remaining battery level has three bars Battery indicater or more.
    • WARNING!!: The camcorder may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.

    USB cable:

    • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camcorder.
    • IMPORTANT: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.

  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

1. Determine if Your Camcorder Needs the Update

This update is only for HDR-AZ1 camcorders that currently have system software version 1.00. If your camcorder system software version is already version 1.01 or later, this update is not necessary.

[Check the version of your camcorder system software:]

  1. Start PlayMemories Mobile installed in your smartphone or tablet, and connect it to the camcorder. Refer to the instruction manual supplied with your camcorder or <Connecting the Camera to Your Smartphone> in the Help Guide for HDR-AZ1.
  2. On PlayMemories Mobile, select [Settings] > [Camera Information] to display the current version.

2. Prepare the Camcorder for the System Software Update

  1. Remove the memory card from the camcorder.
  2. Ensure the camcorder battery is fully charged.

3. Download and Update the System Software

  1. Download the Update_HDRAZ1V101.exe file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
    Note: For Windows 8/8.1, the default settings for Internet Explorer® will save the file in the "Downloads" folder. To locate the Downloads folder, click the "Desktop" tile from the Start screen and then locate the downloaded file using Windows Explorer.

  1. Close all running programs.
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the Update_HDRAZ1V101.exe file to begin the Firmware Updater.
  3. Connect the camcorder to your computer using the supplied USB cable, and turn on the camcorder.
  4. Verify that the remove hardware icon Remove hardware or Remove hardware is displayed in the task tray at the lower right-hand corner of the computer screen.
  5. If the USB connection between the PC and the camera cannot be detected, a message that states that the camera could not be detected is displayed on the PC. Try the following.
    • Disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it.
    • If there are several USB terminals on the PC, try connecting the USB cable to a different USB terminal. Depending on your PC, there may be an additional USB terminal on the back of the unit.
    • Sometimes when the camera is connected to the computer with the USB cable, a message appears to restart the computer. If this occurs, remove the battery pack from the camcorder, restart the computer, reconnect the battery pack, and then start the system software update procedure again.

    Note: If the icon above is not displayed, skip this procedure and go on to the nest step.

  1. At the "Firmware Updater" window, click "Next".
  2. WARNING!!: Do not power off the camcorder or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
  3. At the "Firmware Updater" window, click "Next".
  4. When the following screen is displayed, check the version number at the lower left.

    If the current version is "1.00", click "Next".

    Note: If the current version is "1.01" or later, your camcorder does not need this update. Stop the USB connection by clicking the remove hardware icon Remove hardware or Remove hardware in the task tray in the lower right corner of the computer screen and then click the "Finish" button on the "Firmware Updater" screen. Then power off the camcorder, briefly remove the battery pack, and then power on the camcorder again.
  5. The following screen appears. Click the remove hardware icon Remove hardware or Remove hardware in the task tray in the lower right corner of the computer screen to stop the USB connection.
  6. IMPORTANT: Do not disconnect the USB cable from the camcorder or the computer.
  7. On the camcorder, press the REC (Movie/Photo) button to reset the camcorder.

    After resetting, reconnection of the camcorder is verified, and the following Firmware Updater screen appears.
  8. At the "Firmware Updater" screen, click "Next".
  9. When the following screen is displayed, click "Run".
    Note: The update process takes about 12 minutes to complete.
  10. WARNING!!: Do not power off the camcorder or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
  11. When the update is complete, the following screen is displayed, click "Finish".
  12. Disconnect the USB cable, power off the camera, then remove the battery pack or AC adapter.
  13. Reconnect the battery pack or AC adapter and power on the camera.

4. Check the System Software Version After Updating (optional)

  1. Start PlayMemories Mobile installed in your smartphone or tablet, and connect it to the camcorder. Refer to the instruction manual supplied with your camcorder or <Connecting the Camera to Your Smartphone> in the Help Guide for HDR-AZ1.
  2. On PlayMemories Mobile, select [Settings] > [Camera Information] to display the current version.

    If "1.01" is displayed, the system software update was successful.
    Note: If "1.01" is not displayed, please download and install the system software update again.
