System Software Update Ver.1.01 for HDR-AZ1 (Mac)

What Does This Do?

This utility updates the system software and provides the following benefits:

  • Depending on the region where the camera is used, GPS logs (in movie recording) and/or location information (in still image recording) may not have been recorded. Now, this symptom is corrected.
  • When using the Live-streaming function, images were distributed in an incorrect size with the video size set at 1280x720. Now, this symptom is corrected.

IMPORTANT: This file is only for use with the models identified. Not all models are sold in all countries.

Important Notes

  • This utility is only for use with the Sony® HDR-AZ1 camcorders. Do not install this utility with any other model.
  • WARNING!!: This system software update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous system software version after updating this system software. By continuing this update process and downloading and updating this system software, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:

    A computer with:

    • OS X 10.7 - 10.10
    • IMPORTANT: Users of OS X 10.10 need to download and install DriverLoader. Refer to the instructions below.
    • CPU: Intel® processor*
      * Core™ Solo and Core Duo processors are not supported.
    • Available Hard Disk Space: 200 MB or more
    • Installed Memory (RAM): 512 MB or more
    • A USB port

    Camcorder power supply:

    • Fully-charged dedicated rechargeable battery pack NP-BY1 is required.
    • This update can only be performed when the remaining battery level has three bars Battery indicater or more.
    • WARNING!!: The camcorder may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.

    USB cable:

    • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camcorder.
    • IMPORTANT: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.

  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • Disable the sleep function in advance.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

1. Determine if Your Camcorder Needs the Update

This update is only for HDR-AZ1 camcorders that currently have system software version 1.00. If your camcorder system software version is already version 1.01 or later, this update is not necessary.

[Check the version of your camcorder system software:]

  1. Start PlayMemories Mobile installed in your smartphone or tablet, and connect it to the camcorder. Refer to the instruction manual supplied with your camcorder or <Connecting the Camera to Your Smartphone> in the Help Guide for HDR-AZ1.
  2. On PlayMemories Mobile, select [Settings] > [Camera Information] to display the current version.

2. Prepare the Camcorder for the System Software Update

  1. Remove the memory card from the camcorder.
  2. Ensure the camcorder battery is fully charged.

3. Download and Install DriverLoader (For OS X 10.10 only)

This step is only required if your computer is running Mac OS X 10.10 (or later). In such case a preparatory application need to be run before performing firmware update. If your computer is running OS X 10.9 or lower, it is not needed to perform this and you can directly go the next step "4. Download and Update the System Software".

  1. Download the DL100_1411a.dmg file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).

  1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the DL100_1411a.dmg file. Do not connect the camera at this point.
  2. Double-click the DL100_1411a folder which appears on the Desktop.
  3. Double-click the DriverLoader icon.
  4. The message prompts you to allow the application to make changes. Type the password for the administrative account and click "OK".

4. Download and Update the System Software

  1. Download the Update_HDRAZ1V101.dmg file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).

  1. Close all running programs.
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the Update_HDRAZ1V101.dmg.
    Note: Do not connect the camera to the computer until instructed to do so.
  3. "Update_HDRAZ1V101" folder appears. Double-click the Firmware Updater icon in the folder.
  4. If a "FirmwareUpdater can't be opened because the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed" message appears on the screen when you double-click Firmware Update, please follow the following steps:
    1. Click "OK".
    2. Click the FirmwareUpdater icon while pressing the "Control" key, and then select "Open" in the menu.
    3. Select "Open" when the warning message appears.
  5. At the Password prompt screen, enter the Name and Password for the administrative account, and then click "OK".
  1. "Firmware Updater" screen appears. Power on the camera, connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable. Click "Next" when the connection has been made.
  2. WARNING!!: Do not power off the camcorder or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
  3. At the "Firmware Updater" window, click "Next".
  4. When the following screen is displayed, check the version number at the lower left.

    If the current version is "1.00", click "Next".

    Note: If the current version is "1.01" or later, your camcorder does not need this update. Stop the USB connection, click "Finish", turn off the camcorder, then remove the battery or disconnect the AC adaptor briefly and then power on the camcorder again.
  5. The following screen appears. On the camcorder, press the REC (Movie/Photo) button to reset the camcorder.

  6. At the "Firmware Updater" screen, click "Next".

    After resetting, reconnection of the camcorder is verified, and the following Firmware Updater screen appears.
  7. When the following screen is displayed, click "Run".
    Note: The update process takes about 13 minutes to complete.
  8. WARNING!!: Do not power off the camcorder or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
  9. When the update is complete, the following screen is displayed, click "Finish".
  10. Disconnect the USB cable, power off the camera, then remove the battery pack or AC adapter.
  11. Reconnect the battery pack or AC adapter and power on the camera.

5. Check the System Software Version After Updating (optional)

  1. Start PlayMemories Mobile installed in your smartphone or tablet, and connect it to the camcorder. Refer to the instruction manual supplied with your camcorder or <Connecting the Camera to Your Smartphone> in the Help Guide for HDR-AZ1.
  2. On PlayMemories Mobile, select [Settings] > [Camera Information] to display the current version.

    If "1.01" is displayed, the system software update was successful.
    Note: If "1.01" is not displayed, please download and install the system software update again.
