* Diagonal 6.149 mm (Type 1/2.93) 10.17M-Effective Pixel Color Digital Output CCD Image Sensor for Consumer Digital Still Cameras

ICX688SQG

The ICX688SQG is a CCD image sensor featuring a proprietary integrated package technology that integrates an image sensor with a leading edge 1.34 µm unit pixel capability and with the peripheral drive circuits.
All components that are sensitive to noise have been placed inside the package to minimize the impact of parasitic elements.
This has made it possible to maximize low power consumption and low-noise, both characteristics of Sony image sensors, and commercialized the ICX688SQG.
Also, a 12-bit digital output has eliminated the need for analog terminals and contributes to a reduction in analog design time during integration.

The ICX688SQG is a diagonal 6.149 mm (Type 1/2.93) 10.17M-effective pixel CCD image sensor that was developed for consumer digital still cameras.
* The Industry's First Digital Output CCD Image Sensor
The inclusion of the CCD image sensor (referred to as CCD below) and the AFE (CDS, ADC, timing generator, driver and other peripheral parts) in a single package configuration of the current product into an integrated package in the ICX688SQG has made possible a 12-bit digital output. (See figure 1.)
The inclusion of analog circuits and wiring inside the package has eliminated the need for high-speed phase adjustments in the analog design during integration and made it possible to maximize CCD performance.
* Low Power Consumption
The integration of wiring that normally would go through the flexible circuit board into the package has reduced parasitic elements and enabled optimization of drive current and drive waveform. As a result, power consumption was improved from 311 mW to 255 mW, a roughly 18% power consumption saving when compared to a single package configuration (in mode 3). (See figure 2.)
* Low Noise
The integration of the CCD and AFE into a single package in the ICX688SQG allowed to separate the AFE from the DSP. This minimized the effect of noise from the DSP resulting in a noise reduction of about 7% (in mode 1) compared to a single package configuration. (See figure 1.)
* A Package with Fewer Pins That Occupies Less Space
The integration of wiring into the package has reduced space occupied by the package from roughly 200 mm2 in an original single package configuration to 160mm2, or a roughly 20% saving. (See figure 1.) This has reduced the area occupied by the component making it more compact. The number of pins in the new package has been reduced by about 70% from 140 pins (CCD: 38 pins, AFE: 96 pins, CCD Buffer: 6 pins) in a single package configuration to 42 pins, which contributes to simplifying the design of the final product and lowering the total number of required substrates.

The ICX688SQG is the industry's first CCD image sensor with digital output designed for consumer digital still cameras. The design, which prevents digital signal from impacting analog circuits, has also provided low power consumption and low noise. Improvements in basic characteristics as well as greater ease of integration and the fulfillment of new demands make the ICX688SQG the ideal choice for your next product.
