Optical Interconnection --- Prelude to a Full-Scale Optical Age ---
The Development of Optical Interconnection Technology for Consumer Equipment Applications
High Reliability Achieved with a 10 Gbps Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser and an Optical Waveguide Module
Optical fiber has now reached the home, and consumers now associate “optical” with ultrahigh speed high-capacity transmission.
In contrast, if one looks inside the home at the data transmission between and within equipment units such as various digital home appliances and games, that data transmission is currently almost entirely handled by electrical wiring.
Now that the amount of information handled within the home is increasing dramatically, there is no doubt that there will be increasing desires for a shift from electrical to optical for transmission between and within digital home equipment.
With these near future market needs in mind, Sony has taken the lead by developing its own optical interconnection technologies.
These technologies have now reached the practical level in all areas including reliability.
