The flowering plum tree
This tree was brought to Japan from China, and produce fragrant blossoms around the time of the Chinese lunar new year. It comes into bloom gradually and drops its petals gradually as well. The flowering plum was used in Japanese poetry from well before the Heian period as a metaphoric symbol for flowers in general.
