These photos on the left show the results of abrasion tests. When abrasion rings were run on the recording surface of a DVD disc (the outer track) to forcibly create a situation in which discs are apt to be scratched, numerous scratches arouse on the disc without the hard coat. Meanwhile, there were hardly any scratches found on Sony’s disc with high performance hard coat. This clearly demonstrates the high scratch-resistance of Sony’s high performance hard coat.

The graph on the left compares the rise in errors in played signals measured while forcibly scratching the recording surface of a disc. In the case of discs without the hard coat, the error rate of played signal arouse after only one rotation. However, Sony’s disc with high performance hard coat maintained durability until more than 100 rotations (in other words, it was about 100* times more durable than a disc without the hard coat).
