Updated Fingerprint Authentication Software for Sony MicroVaultTM USB Storage Devices
Models: USM64C, USM128C, USM128F, USM256F and USM512FL

Thank you for your continued interest in Sony products.

As previously announced, in August 2007 Sony learned that the fingerprint authentication software associated with certain discontinued models in our MicroVault USB storage device line installs “cloaked” files on a user’s computer – that is, the files are not visible using ordinary system tools. Sony identified the cause and remedy for this software installation, and released a downloadable patch to resolve the issue in late September. As a follow-up to the patch, Sony is now pleased to provide an updated version of the fingerprint authentication software which provides full functionality of the software but without installing any cloaking technology .

Please follow the instructions below to download and install the updated software.

[Applicable Models]
Sony MicroVaultTM USB Storage Devices with fingerprint authentication:

USM-64C (distributed in Asia/Pacific, Canada, and Latin America)
USM-128C (distributed in Europe, Asia/Pacific, United States, Canada, and Latin America)
USM-128F (distributed in Japan)
USM-256F (distributed in Europe, Asia/Pacific, United States, and Canada)
USM-512FL (distributed in Japan, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia/Pacific, and United States)

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • This software is only intended for use with the models listed above.
  • This software is not required if you have already installed the patch on your computer. However, if you wish to install fingerprint authentication software on a new computer, you will need to install this updated version.
  • Depending on the version of original fingerprint access software and/or on the hardware/software environment of the computer, folders encrypted by the original fingerprint access software may not be recognized as encrypted. Files in the originally encrypted folders, however, are properly encrypted as original, and such folders will be recognized as encrypted again if you encrypt such folders after the patch software is installed.
  • USM64C, USM128C, USM128F and USM256F do not require re-install of the driver software if it is installed previously.
  • A user must have administrative rights to install this update.

<Download Instructions>

  1. Please read all information carefully before downloading and installing this software.
  2. Click the link for your model below:
  3. Click the “How to Uninstall Fingerprint Access Software” link and print or save a copy of the uninstall instructions to your computer.
  4. If desired, click the DOWNLOAD icon to download a copy of the MicroVault operating instruction manual.
  5. Click the “DOWNLOAD” icon and download the .exe file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).

<Installation Instructions>

  1. Follow the “How to Uninstall Fingerprint Access Software” instructions from step 3 above to uninstall of the existing version of the software on your computer.  If the software is not currently installed, please skip this step.

    IMPORTANT:  Once the old software is uninstalled, you will not be able to retrieve encrypted files until the installation of the updated software is completed.  It is recommended that you decrypt all encrypted files on the device and on any computer, and store such decrypted files on their computer and/or other removable recording media before uninstalling the software.

  2. Go to the directory where the updated software file was downloaded and double-click the file.
  3. When prompted, click “OK” to extract the files.

    Note:  This window may vary according to operating system and hardware configuration.
  4. A folder titled “USM-C” for USM64C and USM-128C, “USM-F” for USM128F and USM256F, or “USM-FL” for USM512FL will be created on the desktop.
  5. Open the folder and double-click the “setup.exe” to begin the installation process.  Follow the on-screen prompts carefully to complete the installation.
