In August 2007, Sony learned that the fingerprint authentication software associated with certain discontinued models in our MicroVault USB storage device line installs “cloaked” files on a user’s computer – that is, the files are not visible using ordinary system tools. Security experts advise that third parties could exploit this functionality to conceal harmful programs, although, Sony, is not aware of any actual attempts in this regard.
Sony has since identified the cause and remedy for this software installation, and is pleased to announce that it plans to start distributing a downloadable patch to resolve the issue as of September 28, 2007. In addition to this patch, Sony is preparing an updated version of the software, which will provide full functionality without installing any cloaking technology. Sony will issue this software update as soon as possible.

- Please keep the file [fg.update0709.exe] on your computer desktop.
* This update software corresponds to USM64C, USM128C, USM128F, USM256F and USM512FL.

[How to update the software]
- Click the [FP Manager] icon
in the task-tray, then choose [end]
- Finish [FP Manager] , choosing [Yes] to proceed.
Remark: Update procedure may not finish correctly if the [FP Manager] application is active on your PC.

- Double-click [fg_update0709.exe] to start.
- You will then receive the following prompt: In case that the device is USM512FL, please connect USM512FL to the computer.
Remark : The USM512FL device needs to be connected, so that the original fingerprint access software located on the USB Flash Drive (USM512FL device) will be modified to the latest version simultaneously.
Click [OK] to proceed with the update.

- The update application will start.

- Once the following message is shown, please choose [OK].
* If you choose [Cancel], the system will not be restarted. However, please note that the update will not be complete and the updated fingerprint access software cannot be used unless the computer has been restarted. Prior to using updated fingerprint access software, please restart the computer manually .

* Screenshot might be different depending on a user’s operating system and drive composition.
- Please restart your computer once the update is finished.
< Important remark >
- Please use this patch software only on the computer on which the original fingerprint access software is installed.
- A user must have administrative rights to install this update.
- Depending on the version of original fingerprint access software, on the hardware/software environment of the computer, folders encrypted by the original fingerprint access software may not be recognized as encrypted. Files in the originally encrypted folders, however, are properly encrypted as original, and such folders will be recognized as encrypted again if you encrypt such folders after the patch software is installed.
[Customers who have already uninstalled the original fingerprint access software]
* Prior to installing the above update, please install the original fingerprint access software with no network connection.
** Even if some anti-virus software may detect the patch software as harmful, you can continue to update the software.
Customers who are unable to uninstall the software and have any questions on this matter should contact the Sony Customer Information Center in their country.
