Sony first introduced the 5.25-inch(130mm) MO drives and disks in
fall of 1988 and has earned a major share in MO market.
The first generation started off with 650MB capacity which was
considerably high capacity at the time and spread through the backup/archive market* where high data capacity was required.
Since 1988, Sony has released a number of MO drives and disks.
Sony has doubled the capacity(1.3GB) in 1993, quadrupled it(2.6GB) in 1996, and octupled it(5.2GB) in 1998.
Now, the latest 9.1GB MO drive and disk has been released in 2000.
