| Sony first introduced 5.25 inch(130mm) MO drives and MO disks in fall
of 1988 and has earned a major share in MO business. MO disk had 650MBytes recording capacity per disk that was considerably high capacity at the time. MO drive and MO disk came onto the backup market* with high demand in recording and playing back large data. Since 1988, Sony has released a number of MO drives and MO disks - the double capacity(1.3GBytes) MO drives as the 2nd generation in 1993 and the quadruplet capacity(2.6GBytes) MO drives as the 3rd generation in 1997 - confirming Sony's position as the leader in MO drives and disks industry worldwide. In spring of 1998, Sony has released the eight times capacity(5.2GBytes) as the 4th generation - SMO-F551 and RMO-S551. Now, Sony pursues the development of the fourteen times capacity(9.1GBytes) as the 5th generation. *a market of data archival, network backup and storage and telecommunication system |
