This radio is meant to realize functionality during a disaster with its easy-to-use home radio functions. With homemakers preparing survival kits the targeted users, white, orange, and silver were selected as the bright and distinctive colors as a feature of its emergency preparedness, and for it to stand out in case of a disaster.
To be able to carry the radio easily in case of a disaster, the body must be as compact as possible. Moreover, this radio has many functions that have previously been unavailable on radios of this type, such as a penlight and cell phone recharging function. The main issue involved in implementing functions on the recharger handle was the handle's design. If it were too short, people would have difficulty turning it. Therefore, the handle had to be of a certain length. Placing the handle on the back at an angle could have achieved the necessary length, but such a design would not have been able to convey the very essence of this radio, that of being a rechargeable emergency radio. Finally, we decided to place the handle on the front in a hook shape to ensure sufficient length and avoid interference with other functions.
This radio was aimed at improving ease of use by clearly dividing the function key positions: radio functions are on the front; the penlight and spot light are on the top and side, respectively. In addition, the radio and light part are divided, and the entire body consists of two colors, which not only improve design quality but also clarify function. Our goal in this design project was to make this radio compact yet very easy to use.
