User Centered Design Cyber-shot DSC-N1

Challenge of new touch panel interaction

The most notable characteristic of the Cyber-shot DSC-N1 is its large (3-inch) LCD screen. To achieve this, the cross key controls and OK/CANCEL buttons have been eliminated. Instead, a touch panel is now used to perform operations.

As this was a completely new concept, we had to start from scratch. First, the designers and engineers embarked on an extensive design process by continuously holding information exchange meetings. In addition, an internal website was created. In the process of examining what could be achieved by this new touch panel system, many interesting ideas have come about.

Stylish and easy to use

Digital cameras are used by people of all ages and so we wanted to make the DSC-N1 easy to use. On the top screen, for example, instead of moving a cursor to each item and pressing OK or CANCEL, the user can simply touch a button with an icon to start the desired function. After much trial and error, the optimal buttons sizes were determined. The DSC-N1 is a result of our commitment to creating digital cameras that are stylish and easy to use.
