Sustainable Design Bio Batteries

Sony has developed bio batteries that generate electricity by using enzymes to break down carbohydrates, in the form of glucose. These batteries apply the innate ability of organisms to gain energy from nutrients, which, instead of being converted for vital activities, are used to produce electrical energy. To explain this unprecedented system for generating energy from glucose in a clear and elegant way, Sony R&D and design departments collaborated in matters of design.

Eco-friendly design that's an imitation of life

Bio batteries produce energy by tapping into the natural breakdown of glucose by cells, the building blocks of life. Oxygen is used in cellular respiration, in which it helps cells break down glucose. With this in mind, the design of these Sony bio batteries represents life processes and living organisms. Each battery cell represents a biological cell, and when the four cells are linked, they symbolically form a living organism that produces energy. Holes on the surface represent cellular organelles and air bubbles. Air entering these holes is use in cellular respiration, just as we use oxygen to breathe.

By making the body of vegetable-based plastic and adopting a natural white color and clean, rounded surfaces in the design, we have expressed the eco-friendliness of bio batteries.
