  Responsive Surfaces
Fundamental interface research on how we sense things can be used, from environmental clues called their "affordance".
We explored how interfaces can signal to users that they function as a switch.

Interfaces that sense our presence :
Interaction sparks to life as you bring your hand near this switch interface.
Light and sound begin to hint at the spot you are controlling and the nature of control.
Bring your hand closer, and the switch glows more brightly until it triggers the mechanism.
Withdraw your hand, and the interface dims.
It is a demonstration of the kind of affordance that invites touch.

Interfaces that retain a trace of our presence :
Again, interaction begins as you bring your hand near the surface, which starts to glow.
We have controlled how long the glow remains, so that the interface leaves an impression of its function on users, like an afterimage.
The distance of your hand from the surface can be detected.

In recent design, electronics seem to dissolve into the space around us, and their functions disappear.
This sets the scene for our current fundamental research, in which we reconsider ideal forms of interface.
The projects described here are part of research on spatially oriented interfaces. We explored the theme of "presence" (which has intermediate modes or expressions between "on" and "off") in the generally unquestioned function of a simple switch
