Operation:
Created on the theme of motion graphics control, the prototype features a transparent dial-and-slider control panel overlaid across the device's screen display. The controls adjust the parameters used to define a wide variety of motion graphics. When a control is activated and a parameter changes, the name and status of the function being modified displays below the control, with the display designed around the control's shape and functionality. Once the adjustment is complete, the new setting displays as a motion graphic. Parameters assigned to each control adjust dynamically to the activity of their corresponding applications, enabling complicated system operation with just a limited number of controls. |

Prototype:
Audio and visual equipment has become increasingly complex with the growing diversity of media and data sources. Adding to the hassle, every device serves a different function, and each is controlled by physical means such as push-buttons and dials. The GUI works well in the PC environment, but it is not the solution for all the currently available AV equipment and deployment configurations. Physical control panels are traditionally incorporated into AV product design. In the future, however, as GUI advances into the AV world, demand will shift to virtual control, leaving the display as the only hardware component needed in the system. This will limit greater design freedom.
Synthesizer marries the ease of physical control with GUI multifunctional capability in an integrated user interface. Fusing the physical control components and screen graphics enables new possibilities in design expression.
Advantages over standard interface technologies:
Synthesizer makes simultaneous control of multiple parameters easy. It increases real-time feel and allows more instinctive, trial-and-error operation. Results are displayed right below the hand that made the control adjustment for intuitive feedback-driven control. Synthesizer offers both uniquely satisfying operating feel and extraordinary visual expression. |
